The Bible has records of hundreds of prayers. However, the content of most of these petitions are not known.
We are told that the prophet Elisha prayed to the Lord (2 Kings 4:33) and the Lord raised a child back to life. However, we don’t have the words of that resurrection-power packed prayer.
In Matthew 14:23, we see Jesus dismissing the crowds and going in solitude to pray. There is no record of the words He prayed on that instance, but the record later tells of Him walking on the water.
How many prayers from the Bible can you recall?
You’re thinking. Counting… Probably you may remember these:
- The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13
- Jesus’ prayer in John 17
- Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication – 2 Chronicles 6:12-42
- Hannah’s prayer – 1 Samuel 2:8-18
- A Prayer of Penitence In Isaiah 63:15 – Isaiah 64:12
- Daniel’s prayer for the people in Daniel 9:1-19
- Jonah’s prayer from the fish’s belly – Jonah 2:1-9
- Hezekiah’s prayer for deliverance – 2 Kings 19:14-19
- How Majestic Is Your Name In All the Earth! – Psalm 8:1-9
These are just a few prayers of the Bible that come to mind. There are many things we can learn by examining these prayers recorded in the Bible.
What were the people or individuals praying about?
How we’re their concerns similar to or different than ours – 21st century believers in God?
How did God answer them? Did He? Or what can we learn about God and about those who prayed by studying these prayers?
